Destiny 2 is currently in it’s worst state

Destiny 2, and Bungie, are currently in the worst state they have been in for years. This boils down to 3 factors

  1. The state of their flagship game, Destiny 2
  2. The amount of employees they’ve fired
  3. Marathon

You might ask, “what’s wrong with Destiny 2”? Well, a few things. The seasonal model, which they rebranded as episodes, has become horrifically stale. At this point, truly, there is no way to keep the game going that would feel fresh. They should’ve made a D3 a long time ago.

The current episode is buggy as hell, with the Tether super for Hunters being disabled in Vesper’s Host since it released in early October. They will not have a fix for it until some time in January of 2025. Yet when the event card upgrade for The Dawning was erroneously made free, they had it fixed within the hour.

Bugs aside, the game genuinely feels gross to play. What I mean by that, is that it feels like Bungie has been doing everything they can to deliver less content, while making us pay more for it. At this point, they are not trying to make a game that the fans love or enjoy playing, they simply are milking us for every dollar we have. I do not believe that this is the fault of the developers, but rather the management that oversees what the developers do.

On top of that, Bungie has had two waves of layoffs this year, totaling roughly 400 employees. Rumor has it their work force shrunk by roughly 700. This looks awful, since they claim that the workers were let go do to the poor performance of the game’s latest expansion, “The Final Shape”.

It sounds like they made promises to Sony suits that they were not able to deliver on. So naturally they had to put hundreds of non-corpo workers out of a job. It was allegedly even suggested that the higher ups in corporate take a pay cut, but according to an article by Paul Tassi, they said “It would not happen at the company”. People lost their jobs because Pete Parsons wanted to buy a new car, how disgusting.

Finally, we come to another major issue. Marathon. This game is a reboot of sorts from a IP (Intellectual Property) made some time in the mid 90s. It seems like it is going to be an extraction shooter. This is especially depressing since this splits the already thinning work force they have. Which probably explains why they are trying to get away with the bare minimum and still get payed the maximum.

As an avid Destiny fan with over 10,000 hours, I can tell you right now that I have ZERO interest in playing an extraction shooter made by Bungie. Cards on the table, I don’t think I could stomach any type of game made by Bungie at this point. With their incompetent management and lackluster content delivery I just refuse to deal with them anymore. I refuse to believe I am alone in this thinking, I would be very surprised if there were any hype behind this game amongst Destiny players. They just are not the target audience for extraction shooters.

Ultimately, this has led to Destiny 2 seeing record lows in terms of player count. It truly feels like there is nothing Bungie can do to regain the trust of the community, they simply will just milk the ever dwindling playerbase until it is no longer financially viable.

P.S. Fuck Pete Parsons
