[Destiny 2] How to handle burnout
The do’s and the don’ts of handling Destiny burnout.
Keep in mind, this concept can be applied to literally any video game, Destiny 2 is my main game so I chose to focus on it.
Destiny 2 is an epic looter shooter made by Bungie, the studio that brought us Halo. I have 6000+ hours into the Destiny series and I am not immune to the burnout, the map or the concept. I have burnt out on Destiny and Destiny 2 on several occasions. Hell, I am just now getting over my most recent burnout in order to prepare for the next season and the release of the Vault of Glass.
Burnout can be a real bummer if you allow it to be one, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some some steps you can take to make the most out of your Destiny 2 burnout, and also some advice on what to avoid during said burnout. In all honesty this is going to be more don’ts rather than dos.
Take this time to try other games, there are plenty of fun ones available. Give Destiny a break, when you come back to it with a fresh mindset you will enjoy it much more.
Maybe consider other hobbies like reading, drawing, or whatever else floats your goat. If for some reason you absolutely can’t get into another game, maybe you should step away from the controller for a bit. Go outside, or don’t, cause Covid-19. Either way, consider giving gaming a break for a bit, I’ve never done it, but I’m told it feels great.
Consider what made you get into Destiny in the first place. Why did you press start when you did? It may have been because you were a die hard Halo fan, maybe your buddies talked you into it, or maybe you were suffering from Borderlands withdrawals and needed something to scratch that itch. Whatever the reason is, looking back on it will help you to gain a valuable perspective that you otherwise would not have.
You should not…
Compare other games to Destiny. If you do try out other games, do your best to enjoy them for what they are. You should never try to compare them to Destiny, they’ll never match up and disappoint you endlessly. That’s not to say that they are bad games, they are simply guilty of the crime of not being Destiny.
Go on social media and yell at the poor social media managers or community managers about their game being bad. The game isn’t bad, you just don’t enjoy it as much as you used to. It’s not the game, it’s you. I promise.
Make other people feel bad for enjoying the game. Just because you aren’t enjoying the game doesn’t mean that you need to belittle your friends for continuing to play the game when you have deemed the game “dead”.
Go into Twitch or YouTube streams where people are enjoying the game and spam “dead game LUL”. Again, just because you don’t enjoy the game right now, DOES NOT mean that the game is dead, just your love for it.
I’ve said this way too much already, but I feel it is warranted. Destiny 2 is not dead, only your interest in the game is dead. Destiny 2 will probably last a couple more years before Bungie decides to breathe new life into it, or abandon it for a different project. Only time will tell, until then it’s best not to dwell on if the game will die, just try to enjoy it while we have it.
